Where in the world is JG Black Book of Travel’s Executive Vice President Ed Donaldson? After Dubai and Innsbruck, he stopped in Vienna, Austria. While his stay was brief, that’s all it took for Austria’s richly historical and cultural icon to leave a lasting impression on him.
Pallas Athene Fountain Parliament Building in Vienna, Austria
Vienna as a European destination is utterly incredible. Photograph its intricate architecture, pass hours wandering the labyrinthine museums, or do some damage shopping the boutique-lined Kärntner Strasse. All of this with Wienerschnitzel sandwich in hand.
And after all that excitement, enjoy the comfort of two distinctly luxurious properties that would be more than pleased to accommodate you - Grand Hotel Wien and The Ring. They happen to both be on Kaerntner Ring, a fantastic location. The two hotels practically face one another and it’s right here where you can get all the photomuseumshoppingschnitzel that you can handle.
But let’s use real words now.
The lobby at the Grand Hotel Wien
The terrace at the Grand Hotel Wien
The Grand Hotel Wien is just that…grand. It’s beautifully historic with a magnificent entry. The breakfast dining room overlooks the two-story lobby and the top floor hosts a small, intimate restaurant with views of the cathedral. You’re sure to be enraptured by the grandeur inside, but don’t forget to step out onto the terrace adjacent to the restaurant for a cocktail. (And take a picture!) And don’t be alarmed by the woman in the white hat cutting up the terrace gardens. She’s Jacqueline Pfeiffer the Chef de Cuisine at Le Ciel and she’s just collecting some fresh herbs for dinner. I would highly recommend it for traveler’s seeking an authentic and intimate experience that reflects the city’s history.
The lobby at The Ring
Guest room at The Ring
Although no less luxurious, The Ring offers a completely different encounter with Vienna. Its minimalist décor reflects the spirit of the city today. I was especially taken with the guest rooms. Their innovative design greatly added to the comfort and utility of the room, unlike some other “modern” hotel rooms I have stayed in. The wardrobe, for example, serves as a room divider, revealing a separate changing area. Genius! Despite all of its chic contemporary touches, The Ring managed to hold onto one relic: the center-staircase elevator (it may be old but don’t be alarmed, it’s completely safe and absolutely gorgeous). The street-side bar and restaurant have entrances from within the hotel as well as from the sidewalk and here you can meet plenty of the local Viennese.
Whether you’re looking for an intimate experience in classic European style or a chic, modern getaway, you can find it at the Grand Hotel Wien or The Ring. My advice: stay at both and enjoy the mix this stunning city offers.

Know ye not that if ye will do these things, that the power of the redemption and the resurrection which is in Christ, will bring you to stand with shame and awful guilt before the bar of God?
